The Guyana Folk Festival Family Fun Day will wrap-up the season with a loud cultural exposition of music, dance, and musical performances, on Sunday, Sept. 1, at Old Boys High School Grounds, 736 Rutland Road Brooklyn, from noon – 8 p.m.
Donation ticket is $20.00. Children under 12-years old will enter free.
The Main Stage artists will include Guyana Soca Monarch 2023 Adrian Dutchin, Gavin Mendonca, Jaggae, Demerara Boys, Unique Arts, Angels Caribbean Band, Joro Dance Company. Diamond Natural will serve as emcee.
The festival will include a Children’s village, Egg & Spoon, and Sack races, Drumming Workshop, Dance Movement Workshop, Skipping, (double Dutch), Tug- of-war, Pop-up Education Station, Button making and instrument making workshop.
The Guyana Cultural Association NY Inc., organizers of the Annual Folk festival, celebrated its 23rd season in Brooklyn, with an Awards & Prizes Dinner Reception, on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Golden Hall of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 331 Hawthorne Street, in Brooklyn.
Awards were presented in categories, Lifetime, Dr. Vibert Cambridge, Exemplary, Roxanne Lashley, GCA, Errol Hazelwood, Lorraine Croft-Farnell, Andy Ninvalle, Calvin Booker, Anthony Alleyne, GCA Business Partner Emblem Health, Ann Marie Adamson-Serieux. Godfrey Chin1st Prize Leon More 2nd Prize-The Shabna Show (Shabna Rahman), 3rd Prize Philip Wallace, Derry Etkins Composition, Preservation, Rudy Bishop, Claire A. Goring Youth Award, Jean Moise Merable, ISAAC Scotland, and JoHannah Rae George.
According to the executive committee, headed by President Ave Marie Brewster-Haynes, the festival is being celebrated under the theme: Hope, Harmony, Continuity, and continue with a Kwe Kwe Night, on Friday, Aug. 30, in St. Stephen’s auditorium 2806 Newkirk Ave., Brooklyn from 7 p.m. – midnight. Donation ticket is $20.00.
The organization that has been a mainstay over the many years, educating, and sharing skills to community children, recently ended its Summer Workshop Series (SWS) with a powerful presentation of music, dance and an exhibition showcasing the incredible arts and craft and activities learned during the July 8 – Aug. 16, camp.
