Chris Gayle became the first West Indian batsman to reach 300 One-Day International (ODI) in the process breaking Brian Lara’s record on his home ground at the Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad as the region’s leading ODI scorer with 10,353 runs.
Gayle got the seven runs he needed when the West Indies played their second ODI on Sunday after the first one in Guyana was washed out three days before.
He made just 11 runs before being LBW off medium pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
West Indies were in positions to win but threw away the match and were bowled out for 210 off their 20 overs.
At one point the regional team was handily placed at 147 for 3 after 27 overs when Shimron Hetmyer had enough and decided to throw his wicket away for 18.
West Indies came back to be 179 for four after 34 overs when Nicholas Pooran was out for 42. Evin Lewis top-scored with 65 off 80 balls.
There were two stoppages because of intermittent rain and under the Duckworth-Lewis method West Indies had to score 170 runs off 46 overs but capitulated for 210.
Captain Virat Kholi scored 120 in the process and scoring 2000 runs against the West Indies in 34 innings.
The third and final ODI of the series will be played at the same venue later this week.
