FUSION JAZZ

Christian Scott and his band are setting stages on fire around the world and will soon be in New York to play their brand of fusion jazz. The Christian Scott Ensemble will play the Blue Note, New York, Thursday, Jan. 16 through Sunday, Jan. 19. Shows are at 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. nightly. Scott is from New Orleans, which in itself has a rich jazz history, from Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong to Wynton Marsalis and before, New Orleans has been yielding great music and musicians since the first Africans were brought there to build an economy based on slave labor. Lauded as an experimental jazz musician, Christian Scott has blended musical forms: New Orleans Jazz/Blues, Afro-Cuban, West Africa and even Native American tradition into what he offers as his contribution to the jazz scene.

Thirty-year-old Scott and his band members are young, and all accomplished musicians in their own right: Matthew Stevens, guitar; Jamie Williams, drums; Lawrence Fields, piano; Kristopher Keith Funn, bass. Christian Scott plays a horn of his own design, a combination of coronet, flugelhorn and trumpet. His horn not only produces a sweet searing sound, but it is also a beautiful work of art, a metal or bass sculpture.

Christian Scott is a two-time Edison Award winning jazz trumpeter, composer, producer. His debut album, “Rewind” was nominated for a Grammy as well as his latest album or CD is “Christian aTunde Adjuah.” In between he recorded “Anthem,” “Live at Newport,” “Yesterday You Said Tomorrow” and “Ninety Miles.”

At 13, Scott was given an opportunity to play with his uncle, jazz alto saxophonist, Donald Harrison and he has been playing and recording ever since. He received a full scholarship from and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he completed his undergraduate degree in Professional Music with a concentration in Film Scoring in three years. Scott is a phenomenal musician with a powerful “voice.” He is breaking barriers and challenging the music world. He is a force to be reckoned with and to be recognized.
