Queens Central Library in Jamaica is offering a free Creative Writers’ Workshop for those with an “itch to write” led by writer and performer Jennifer Celestin.
The series of eight guided workshops to “get you writing” will be held on Sundays from April 3 – May 22 at 1 pm in the main floor conference room.
Different writing techniques and exercises will be explored to free creativity.
“We’ll have two poetry workshops, two short story workshops, and two revision workshops,” Celestin explains, adding that, “writing is rewriting.”
Haitian-American Celestin has been facilitating workshops for more than 10 years.
“I love that it (the workshop) makes the writing process communal and gives writers deadlines,” she says of the workshop structure. “People can come for one session or all.”
Holding an M.A. from NYU, currently Celestine is completing an M.F.A. in Fiction at CUNY: Queens College.
Her writings are included in the City Lore Anthology of Haitian poetry, Label Me Latina/o: Journal of 20th & 21st Centuries Latino Literary Production, and in Akash
A three-time attendee of the National Book Foundation’s Summer Writing Workshops, Celestin has also facilitated workshops outside of the U.S., in Montreal and Haiti, after the earthquake.
She has also performed at numerous venues in New York City, including the Bowery Poetry Club and Café, Lincoln Center Out of Doors and BRIC Arts Media.
