Ashley Capri, a first-generation Guyanese-American and a multi-hyphenate creative, has transformed her passion for design and Caribbean heritage into a thriving luxury swimwear brand, Capri Swim. Born and raised in New York with deep Guyanese roots, Capri draws inspiration from her family’s influence, particularly her grandmother, a tailor and seamstress whose work ethic and creativity left an indelible mark.

“I’m a dancer, a model, an actress, a CEO, a designer, and a tailor,” Capri said. “I’ve always had a passion for creating things, and my Guyanese family poured into that part of me. That encouragement allowed me to explore my creative interests, especially dance, which eventually led me to fashion.”

Capri began her career as a professional dancer, performing for the Brooklyn Nets and juggling various creative projects. However, the demands of her career left her feeling burnt out. In 2017, she started traveling to beach destinations as a form of self-care, eventually inspiring her swimwear line.

“I couldn’t find a minimal thong bikini that wouldn’t leave crazy tan lines, so I decided to design my own,” Capri said. Her custom creations quickly gained attention among friends, leading to the launch of Capri Swim in 2021. Initially hand-making every piece, Capri transitioned to manufacturing in 2024 to meet growing demand while maintaining her commitment to quality.

What sets Capri Swim apart is its focus on affordable luxury, Caribbean-inspired accents, and practical design. All pieces are reversible, offering customers two looks for the price of one, and feature gold hardware as a nod to her Guyanese heritage.

“The gold accents are a staple and an ode to my heritage,” Capri explained. “Gold is cherished in Guyana, and I’ve inherited several gold heirlooms from my grandmother. It’s a part of who I am.” Additionally, Capri Swim offers a lifetime warranty on gold hardware, allowing customers to replace worn pieces for free and ensuring long-lasting quality.

Capri credits her Guyanese upbringing and her grandmother’s example as key influences in her journey. “My grandmother worked tirelessly, sewing dresses and tailoring while raising her family. Watching her inspired me to sew and embrace my creative side,” Capri said. Her swimwear designs reflect this heritage, blending Caribbean aesthetics with modern functionality.

In November 2024, Capri launched her “Chocolate Dreams” capsule inspired by a trip to Italy filled with unexpected challenges and unwavering friendships. Capri plans to release her following collection in March 2025, which will include fully reversible pieces for men.

“My goal is to create swimwear that embodies luxury, versatility, and a connection to my roots,” Capri said. “It’s about celebrating who I am and sharing that with the world.”

Capri Swim also champions underrepresented communities in fashion by prioritizing Black and brown creatives and manufacturers. Through intentional practices, she creates opportunities for marginalized voices, making the brand a catalyst for empowerment and lasting change.

Capri Swim continues to make waves in the fashion industry, showcasing the beauty of Caribbean culture and the power of perseverance.
