Another edition of the CONCACAF Nations League will come to a close this week at the 2022-23 CNL Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada where the United States, Mexico, Panama and Canada will each vie for the crown.
CONCACAF said on Friday that the group stage in League A saw many great individual performances from players and collective displays from teams.
“Look no further than US FW Jesus Ferreira, who topped all players in League A in scoring with four goals,” CONCACAF said.
“Coincidentally, all four of those goals came in a single match, as the FC Dallas man tallied four times in the 5-0 US win against Grenada in June 2022,” it added. “Ferreira also led all players in shots on target with six and was the youngest player to score in League A at 21 years, five months and 18 days.
CONCACAF said Shamar Nicholson of Jamaica was once again one of the main playmakers in a CNL group stage.
After delivering four assists in the 2019-20 edition for the Reggae Boyz, Nicholson had another two assists in the 2022-23 group stage, tying him with U.S. MF Luca de la Torres for the most assists in League A, CONCACAF said.
It said Curacao GK Eloy Room stood out among his League A peers for the most saves with nine, while no one completed more passes than El Salvador’s Brayan Landaverde, who connected 197 passes.
CONCACAF said Jamaica also starred in a pair of important categories.
It said Reggae Boyz player Devon Williams tied with Curacao’s Juninho Bacuna for the most ball recoveries with 12, while Junior Flemmings of Jamaica drew the most fouls with 10.
On a team level, CONCACAF said the US had the most goals with 14, while Mexico amassed the most goal-scoring opportunities (37) and had the most shots on target (20).
CONCACAF said Panama was also one of the offensive leaders, registering the most shots to hit the post (2) and the most completed passes during the group stage (1,203).
“Not to be outdone were Jamaica with 52 ball recoveries and Honduras with 52 fouls drawn, the most out of all teams in League A on both fronts,” CONCACAF said.
