The Jamaican Consulate General in New York, will host an evening of culture on Monday, August 6, 2012, at the Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. The program will start at 6:00 p.m. in the theatre at the Bedford Avenue College Campus.
Billed as “An Evening of Culture…Jamaica 50” to mark the celebration of Jamaica attaining 50 years as an independent country, the program will trace the development of the various forms of culture in Jamaica over the years.
Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Mr. Herman LaMont, notes that he is pleased to be hosting an event, which will showcase the many talents of Jamaicans. Jamaica has, over the years, produced some of the most talented performers who have impacted not only Jamaica, but the world as a whole and this evening of culture will place on exhibition those talents.
There will be dance performances ranging from Kumina, Quadrille, to Ska to today’s dancehall. There will also be tributes to many icons of the Jamaican theatre, notably the late Professor Rex Nettkleford who led the National Dance Company of Jamaica for many years, the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley, Randolph “Mass Ran” Williams and Trevor Rhone, among others.
Jamaican performers and visual artistes, who are some of New York’s best secrets, will showcase their talents at this event of culture.
The public is invited to attend wearing their black, green and gold or “bandana”, to what promises to be a memorable evening of fun.
