The Trinidad and Tobago consulate in New York, in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Interfaith Council of New York and the Committee for the Commemoration of Emancipation Day (Brooklyn) held the first Emancipation Day celebrations at the verdant Prospect Park in Brooklyn on Saturday, August 4.
The celebrations started outside the Park with a parade comprising Trinidad and Tobago nationals in traditional African garb accompanied by drummers. The occasion was consecrated with prayers by Emancipation Committee members with traditional Yoruba rituals. Representing the Trinidad and Tobago Interfaith Council in New York were Dr. Glenville Ashby and Bishop Allan Baxter.
Consul General Rudrawatee Nan Ramgoolam addressed the enthusiastic gathering and complimented them on their efforts to start the Emancipation Day traditions in New York. She noted that the event was also auspicious because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. She also thanked sponsor Conrad Ifill of Conrad’s Famous Bakery for his generous contribution to the event.
