It’s amazing assisting a woman as she brings a child to life. If you’re looking at the parents, the look on their faces when you bring them their ‘bundle of joy’ — that’s the experience!,” says Dr. Louis Camilien.
This doctor is chief of gynecology and vice chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York Methodist Hospital where he has worked for 20 years. This specialty has occupied him for 38 years and he feels privileged in it.
After earning his medical degree from the State University of Haiti, Dr. Camilien completed residencies in obstetrics, gynecology and pathology at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn.
In addition to his professional appointments, Dr. Camilien serves as chairman of the board of directors at the Brooklyn Perinatal Network and is also a member of the New York State Medical Society’s Medicaid Committee. He has been a member of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad since 1990.
“One of the best doctors in New York” wrote New York Magazine many times as well as the Castle Connolly Medical Guide.
Previously, he helped establish a birthing center and provision for pre-natal care for low-income patients.
Also, Dr. Camilien was involved with a program to negotiate loan forgiveness to attract more physicians to Central Brooklyn. He continues to be a part of the Minority Mentoring Program at SUNY-HSCB.
This honoree quotes George Washington Carver: “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” His dad and inspiration saw education differently. “He pushed people to be the best they could always be,” says Dr. Camilien. “My dad quoted Aristotle: ‘The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.’ ”
