Delta Airlines General Manager for corporate communications for Latin American and The Caribbean, Sara M. Lora, was a bit coy about reports that the airline giant is about to cancel its JFK -Georgetown route.
In a telephone conversation with Caribbean Life from her Atlanta, Georgia office, Lora argued that Delta has not made a statement of its intention to sever ties with the Guyana government.
“Delta continues to monitor the Georgetown route and has not made a decision as to its Georgetown schedule,” said the Delta official, who was quoted as saying that the airline “had not made an official announcement” concerning the New York to Guyana route..
“We have not confirmed flights beyond the month of May, but we expect to have a decision and will communicate the flight’s status as soon as possible, added Lora, who promised to contact Caribbean Life if a decision is made to confirm the airline’s pull-out from Guyana.
The flurry of news reports by Guyanese online sites claiming that the carrier would end its service in May of this year sent Guyanese travelers into a mass of confusion, worried that their summer season travel with Delta would be interrupted.
The were reports that the airline, which added the South American destination to its roster five years ago, was pulling out of Guyana in favor of a more lucrative route. Other reports stated that the airline giant could not compete with lower airfares offered by Caribbean Airlines, which enjoyed the advantage of a fuel concession offered bynthe Trinidad and Tobago government.
