Malik Dacres, a senior at Lawrence High School, is thinking about attending Monroe College in Westchester County, because, as he puts it ‘it has a good program.” He also recently said that if he goes there it will be for four years come this fall.
For the immediate concern he wants to help his school be a contender to win the Nassau County or Section VIII indoor track and field title in the upcoming County Championships. He would like to become an all-around athlete by competing on his high school’s indoor track and field and football teams.
“Track and field is an easy sport, and I can win medals in it,” said Dacres, earlier during this indoor season. “It’s fun.”
In the meantime, Dacres will try to do well on the track and field team at Lawrence. Right now he wants to concentrate on winning medals at his high school.
He won 10 medals in three years for excelling on the school’s track team. His favorite event is the shot put. However, he is also a star player and starter on the Lawrence High football team as well. If Dacres decides to attend a Division I or II college he might have to choose which sport he will accept the offer from.
“I feel that I am strong and the shot put comes easy to me,” he said.
He has been on this track and field team for three years, starting out in his sophomore year.
“The coaches didn’t keep me in my event for three years and I have won medals for the school,” he went on.
He also can do the weight throw, but the school doesn’t hold such an event at present. According to one of the coaches, Lawrence is working on installing another event to its meets — the weight throw.
“I learned how to do the shot put by myself,” he went on. “My friends told me about my events and I picked it up by myself, and fast.”
His father Dominic Dacres, who presently resides in Flushing, Queens, is an engineer by trade Dominic and originally comes from the Caribbean.
“I’m not sure what sport he played,” Malik added. “But I think it was cricket.”
“Competition is pretty hard here at Lawrence High,” he added. “My teammates and I compete against other Nassau County schools like Baldwin, Lynbrook, and Roosevelt.
Now he wants to be the best of my field event throwers both for indoors and outdoors. The indoor County meet is coming up Tuesday and Wednesday both at St. Anthony’s High School in Suffolk County, followed by the State Qualifier, and then the State Meet, the highlight for track and field program in New York State. The State meet is everybody’s goal, both as a team and as an individual.
