Organizers of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) say with the help of the CPL, a new crop of Twenty20 stars is on the horizon.
CPL Chief Operating Officer, Pete Russell said West Indies team was now experiencing a transition period, and he was confident that with some of the younger players around including Shimron Hetmyer, and Nicholas Pooran and more developing in the coming years in the CPL West Indies supporters should not be worried.
West Indies has produced some of the world’s best Twenty20 cricketers such as Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Smith.
Those top players helped the West Indies to world Twenty20 titles in 2012 and 2016.
However, most of those players are either in the twilight of their career or not back in the West Indies team after feuding with Cricket West Indies (CWI) for years.
Since 2016 West Indies have struggled to find consistency and are now ranked ninth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty20 rankings.
Russell said playing in the CPL is an opportunity to gain exposure and get signed to other Twenty20 leagues adding that West Indies players deserve that opportunity.
He said fast bowler Oshane Thomas is another player who has developed because of the CPL and is considered one of the most promising fast bowlers in the region.
