Claudette Powell, a registered professional nurse who has served in a wide array of specialties. Her career and experience span over twenty years in home healthcare administration encompassing hospitals and community based programs. Her work as a consultant covers home healthcare accreditation, regulatory requirements, surveys and audits including telehealth care management. Claudette’s strong passion for nursing and healthcare led her to venture and participate in a wide range of healthcare activities.
Claudette Powell is integrally involved in promoting healthcare in Jamaica where she was born, and led the United States delegation at the International Healthcare Fact Finding Mission in Jamaica October 2011. In November 2010 she participated at the Jamaica 2030 Health Care Vision Forum in Minnesota with officials from the Jamaican Ministry of Health to develop the framework for the healthcare system. She is instrumental in developing partnerships with medical institutions in the United States and Jamaica, and facilitating nurses coming from Jamaica to receive specialty training in the United States. In January 2014, Claudette was appointed by the minister of health in Jamaica to the Advisory Body.
Claudette is also professionally affiliated with several organizations in various capacities including: President of Caribbean American Nurses Association, former president of Jamaica Nurses Group of New York Inc., co-chair for Jamaican Diaspora Northeast Health Sector, member of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Association, vice president of St Hugh’s Alumni Association New York Chapter, vice president of the Guyana-Jamaica Friendship Association and the Jamaica Diaspora Committee Northeast USA.
Claudette presented at the Haitian American Nurses Association conference in New York, Society for Advancement of the Diaspora-Women’s History Month Celebration March 2011 and 2012. Her presentation was featured in the New Yorker magazine. She was also a panelist at the Jamaica Diaspora Convention in Jamaica in 2015, 2013, 2011 and 2010 and the Nurses Association of Jamaica Island Conference 2011. Claudette is the consultant and coordinator of a weekly radio program “You and Your Health” on WVIP 93.5 FM. She also served on the CARICOM Consular Corps annual health fair committee. Claudette has been invited as guest speaker at several community events with topics on volunteerism locally and in Jamaica.
Amidst her busy schedule, Claudette volunteers several hours of work in medical missions to Jamaica, conducts health fairs in New York, and coordinates monthly blood pressure screenings at her local church. She serves on the Jamaica Independence Church Service committee in New York. She is committed to excellence, and her work over the years earned her several awards including the “Excellence in Nursing” award in 2008 by the Caribbean American Nurses Association, Women Celebrating Women award by the Honorable Dr. Una Clarke, Humanitarian Award by the Sickle Cell Trust November 2011, “Outstanding Service” award by the New York Black Nurses Association February 2012 ,Caribbean Life Award May 2014 and the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in the Diaspora 2015
