It’s that time of year again! The Annual Church Avenue Street Fair will unfurl its magic on Sunday, April 26, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on Church Avenue between Coney Island Avenue and Argyle Road. The Street Fair is the place to discover the unique products and services of area organizations, entrepreneurs and artists.
Executive Director of the BID Lauren Elvers Collins said, “We are proud of the incredible diversity of businesses that come out of the Church Avenue BID area, and are excited that the distinctiveness of the area will be shared and experienced by all who attend the Street Fair.”
This year’s attractions include the Chicken-on-Church Food Competition, which challenges local chefs of the Church Avenue BID to join in the competition by submitting a dish that includes chicken. The participants include chefs from Am-Thai, Anarkali, Downtown Natural, El Acuario Restaurant, Golden Krust, Hunger Pang, Mallenche, and Shayna’s. With such excellent eateries of varying cuisines participating, selecting a winner won’t be easy, but at 1:15 p.m. at the BID’s table (located on Church Ave. between E. 10th St. and Stratford Rd.), that is what the panel of eight judges will do. Local judges, including Editor-in-Chief of Buzzfeed Ben Smith and Mary Bakija and Anna Gustafson from Ditmas Park Corner, will determine a winner.
At the Medina Silk Screening booth (located on Church Ave. between Coney Island Ave. and E. 10th St.), Street Fair goers can pick from one of the designs that have been created exclusively for the BID and silk screen their own shirt. T-shirts will be provided while supplies last or people can bring their own plain white t-shirt to use.
There will also be a temporary compost drop-off hosted by Q Gardens. The Q Gardens team consists of a handful of local residents who spent the past 2.5 years working with the MTA to reclaim the overgrown lot behind the Church Avenue B/Q train station. Just last month, they began clearing the land towards the lot’s transformation into a community garden and will be at the fair with a composting bin to collect food scraps and answer questions about their project.
