West Indies Players Association (WIPA) has congratulated Shivnarine Chanderpaul on becoming the ninth highest scorer in Test cricket.
Chanderpaul’s unbeaten knock of 87 and 91 in the first Test against England at Lord’s last week took him to 10,233 runs, overtaking legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar, who has 10,122 runs.
WIPA Chief Executive Officer Michael Hall said, “Shiv’s inexorable march towards icon status continued with a typical response to a duty’s call.
“WIPA salutes him on moving past Gavaskar into the ninth place on the all-time Test runs chart.”
He added, “We also send heartiest congratulations to debutant Shannon Gabriel who grabbed four wickets (in the England Test) and hope that this first signals for him the start of a long and successful career.
Despite not being selected for the limited overs format of the game, Chanderpaul has continued to excel in Test cricket, which he is currently holding the top spot in the Reliance ICC Test batsman rankings.
The WIPA concluded by wishing Chanderpaul further success as he continues to play with the same passion, commitment and dedication since making his debut in l994.
