The Caribbean Media Awards made a triumphant return during the vibrant Caribbean Week festivities in New York City from June 16 to 21, celebrating the exceptional talent and dedication of journalists and influencers in promoting the region’s diverse beauty and culture.
The event, hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), recognized outstanding media contributions from the Caribbean and the United States.
Hon. Kenneth Bryan, minister for Tourism & Ports of the Cayman Islands and chairman and CEO of the Caribbean Media Association presided over the awards ceremony, infusing the night with humor and warmth.
He emphasized the vital role these journalists play in highlighting the beauty and culture of the Caribbean, significantly aiding in meeting tourism goals and objectives.
“These awards are not just about recognizing content; they are a testament to the enduring spirit of the Caribbean,” said Bryan. “Our goal is to spotlight the stories that inspire, inform, and engage audiences worldwide, ultimately driving tourism and supporting our economies.”
Brent Pinheiro of the Trinidad Guardian stood out, winning three awards: Best Feature Article or Story, Best Video Production, and Emerging Journalist of the Year. His captivating piece, “This Week in Travel, Learning the Art of Batik,” earned him the Best Feature Article or Story award.
Romardo Lyons from TVJ Jamaica received the Best News Reporting award for his impactful story on the struggles faced by coffee growers in the region.
Kaitlyn McNab from Teen Vogue won the Best Personal Immersive Story award for her touching piece on Grenada’s Spice Mas Carnival. Melissa Noel from ESSENCE won the Diaspora Journalist of the Year award for her exceptional work in representing Caribbean culture and issues.
Joshua McGee of Guyana won the Best Photojournalism award, with a representative from Caribbean Airlines accepting the award on his behalf. Giovanni Dennis from Radio Jamaica won the Best Podcast/Radio award for his insightful episode on climate change in Jamaica, accepted by his friend Margot Lange.
The Jamaican Tourism Board took home the Best Social Media Campaign award for its innovative Valentine’s Day in Jamaica campaign, praised for its creativity and effectiveness.
The event was sponsored by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, the Caribbean Media Awards 2024 was not just about trophies and accolades. It was a celebration of the vibrant Caribbean spirit, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the shared passion for storytelling. The event underscored the vital role media plays in showcasing the region’s unique charm and allure, ultimately contributing to its thriving tourism industry.
