Brooklyn Public Library presented NEA Jazz Master Candido Camero’s 90th Birthday Jam with special guests The Arturo O’Farrill Quintet on Thursday, April 7 as part of the Jazz Appreciation Month’s 10th anniversary and the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.
The celebration of Brooklyn jazz continues into its second week with a tribute to Thelonious Monk, Jazz at Two Steps Down, music concert at Janes United Methodist Church, Doug Carn Quartet, Jeff King Band, and Jazz! The Women’s View Point among other performances.
Jazz legend Candido’s Birthday Jam concert was made possible by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History in cooperation with Brooklyn Public Library and held at BPL’s Dweck Center for Contemporary Culture.
Arturo O’Farrill, Adam O’Farrill, Peter Brainin, Ruben Rodroguez, Zack O’Farrill, Earl and Rene McIntyre joined Cuban master connguero Candido Camero on stage.
Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival is NYC’s longest continually running grass roots festival dedicated to jazz. This month long program (35 events, 22 days over 100 musicians) is sponsored by the 40-member organization of CBJC with support from Brooklyn Tourism and Visitors Center an initiative of Borough President Marty Markowitz.
Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium/CBJC founded in 1999, is an amalgam of patrons of jazz musicians, entertainment venues, faith based institutions, and community organizations.
Over the past 12 years, CBJC has presented an annual spring festival, established a Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame & Museum and produced yearly programs that feature local jazz talent. CBJC is a nonprofit corporation committed to preserving, promoting and supporting live music within the under served communities of Brooklyn.
