The undisputed Calypso Queen of the World, Calypso Rose, will headline a major gospel concert in Grenada on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Calypso Rose, whose real name is McCartha Lewis, will be among four of the Caribbean’s top gospel artistes, who will perform at the Spice Basket in a fundraising venture organized by the Methodist Church Circuit and the Brooklyn-based Dee Vee International Production.
Just before leaving for the “Spice Isle,” Rose told Caribbean Life that she will grace the stage with some of her greatest and well- known gospel hits.
“I’m expecting a very large turn-out,” she said. “I hope to give them (audience) all on my spiritual side. I’m a Spiritual Baptist [because of] my father.
“I got all of my gospel songs – some I got in my dreams,” she added. “I know it’ll be a very, very, very, very good show down there.”
Derek Ventour, the Grenadian-born president of Dee Vee International Production, said the other top gospel artistes are Gerald Placide, Beverly “Sister Beverly” Irish and the Rev. Eastlyn Orr.
Ventour said the show will also feature the Methodist Church Choir; Jeverson Ramirez; Randal Robinson; and Thornia Williams, the 2015 Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN) Gospel Challenge winner. Popular Grenada radio personality Harold Pysadee will serve as master of ceremony.
“The date and time for this show were specifically chosen to coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday, so we can give God thanks in praise and songs with some of the top gospel artistes in the region,” said Ventour, who is assisting the Methodist Church in coordinating and producing the event.
“This is an opportunity for all of Grenada to come out and give thanks,” he added.
Christopher DeRiggs, chairman of the fundraising committee, said: “I think that the cast of gospel singers from the US will experience a kind of homecoming on this visit to Grenada, as, at least, one of them has Grenadian roots.
“It is also an opportunity to celebrate the Grenada-Tobago connection in the case of Rose and Eastlyn,” he said.
This will be the second major fundraising event organized by the Methodist Church, as it embarks on activities to raise much-needed funds for the circuit.
