A plea to cheer the children, give to the needy and in keeping with the sentiment of the holiday season of fostering goodwill, the People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective and Medgar Evers College is urging donations to assist with their annual Feed The Need event on Dec. 21.
Organized in collaboration with the MEC Student Life and the MEC student government, the Collective is continuing a Kwanzaa tradition of giving back to the community while simultaneously celebrating the Pan-African tradition.
To that end, from now until then, generous donations can be dropped off at a designated zone in room C-16, MEC Repo Center, 1150 Carroll St. in Brooklyn.
Items urgently needed are toys, socks, gloves, scarves, and warm clothing that will be given to disfranchised children and adults from the community.
Each year, organizers host a free dinner, a concert and also treat families with toys and warm clothing.
Socks are the priority for donation and toys for the children, a real necessity.
The annual continues a tradition of celebrating Kwanzaa, the Pan-African cultural holiday, honor observed for seven days after Christmas.
At the Brooklyn college named for a Civil Rights martyr slain by racists in the south, the one-day all-inclusive event personifies all seven principles (known as Nguzo Saba) perceived by Dr. Maulana Karenga when he created the African diasporic cultural holiday period.
With its creation in 1966, Dr. Karenga introduced a daily, ceremonial candle-lighting ritual. Fruits and nuts are integral to the family activity which lauds, unity, independence and self-reliance among its tenets.
MEC’s annual combines an invitation to families for a free offering of food, fun, fashion, entertainment and camraderie with a bonus of vendors offering rare crafts, collectibles and unique homemade rarities designed with African and Caribbean influences.
Although the names of poets, dancers, singers, drummers and all the usual performers have not et been announced the event is slated to begin on Dec. 21 at 3:30 pm. in the gymnasium at Carroll St.
