Brooklyn secured seven Democratic Supreme Court Justice nominees on Thursday after nearly 400 judicial delegates at the Kings County Democratic County Committee’s Judicial Convention voted to place the slate on the November ballot.
The nominees are Hon. Keisha Alleyne, Hon. Inga O’Neale, Hon. Christopher Robles, Hon. Adam D. Perlmutter, Hon. Lisa Lewis, Hon. Jeffrey Sunshine, and Hon. Sharen Hudson.
Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, told Caribbean Life on Tuesday that the Judicial Convention, held at Marine Park Golf Course in Brooklyn, was “a transparent and efficient process for the largest county Democratic Party in the nation.”
She said judicial delegates from the county’s 21 Assembly Districts cast their votes at the crowded public venue.
Bichotte Hermelyn, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, who represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn, said Supreme Court Justices “play a critical role in Brooklyn and beyond, presiding over New York’s trial court with the broadest jurisdiction, handling both criminal and civil matters, with the exception of claims against the state.
“The nominees, all of whom were vetted by the Party’s Judicial Screening Committee, bring decades of experience in the court system and have a strong track record of advocacy within the legal community, reflecting the diversity of the borough they will serve,” she said.
Notably, all seven candidates on Monday were also endorsed by the Brooklyn Democratic Party’s District Leaders, who “carefully assessed and supported candidates to advance fair and equitable justice for their communities,” Bichotte Hermelyn said.
“I’m honored that we have nominated such an exemplary roster of Supreme Court Justices who will help Brooklynites while filling our courts with highly-qualified, culturally competent and diverse Justices,” she added.
