Bronx Borough Prez celebrates Black History Month

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson hosted her Black History Month celebration at Eastwood Manor on Eastchester Road in the Bronx on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Gibson, whose father hails from Trinidad and Tobago, said the evening recognized the richness of African American tradition, culture, and history in the Bronx and featured special performances. CBS-2 Newscaster Alicea Reid served as emcee.

Also receiving awards were Woodlawn Cemetery for preserving the memories of prominent African-Americans; Celebrity Chef Kwame Onwuache; Rebecca Foster, Ujima Sound Productions; Allyshia Renay Hamilton of Get Away For A Day With Allyshia Renay; and Slick Rick, GRAMMY Award winner and founder of Victory Patch Foundation.

“I am enormously proud of the achievements made by each of our honorees, from our Deputy City Clerk, Shirley Saunders, who received the Aurelia Greene Memorial Award, to Woodlawn Cemetery for preserving the memories of prominent African Americans,”  Gibson told Caribbean Life afterward.

“Celebrity Chef Kwane Onwuacho from Tatiana’s Restaurant at 10 Lincoln Square; Rebecca Foster, producer with Ujima Sound Productions; Allyshia Renay Hamilton, producer of ‘Get Away for a Day with Allyshia Renay’; and Slick Rick, a GRAMMY Award and founder of Victory Patch Foundation, each continue to share their talent with us in unique and profound ways,” she added.
