Harry Belafonte, the original king of calypso will return to the stage to deliver his incomparable performance on Nov. 15.
The 86-year-old singer, actor and civil rights activist will make a rare appearance to benefit Harlem’s Impact Repertory Theater.
Slated to begin at 7:00 p.m., the performance will be held at First Corinthian Baptist Church, 1912 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. at 116th St.
The special, one-night concert will aid in providing assistance to the 16-year-old cultural group, which is credited with improving the lives of hundreds of teenagers.
Founded by Jamal Joseph, a former member of the Black Panther Party and film professor at Columbia University, the group was nominated for an Academy Award for their rendition of “Raise It Up,” a song featured in the movie “August Rush.”
Since that time they have been celebrated at numerous cultural and social events.
According to Wikipedia – Belafonte ‘was dubbed the “King of calypso” for popularizing the Caribbean musical style with an international audience in the 1950s. Belafonte is perhaps best known for singing “The Banana Boat Song” with its signature lyric “Day-O.”
