Events producer, Danny Kapilian promises that this 21st year of the R&B Festival at MetroTech will be fantastic. The festival opened on Thursday, June 4 with Bobby Rush a known show stopper and R&B legend. The festival which features 10 noon-time Thursday concerts will end on Aug. 6.
This year’s lineup includes returning artist like George Clinton and Bobby Rush, as well as new artist such as Grammy Award winner Erica Campbell (and longtime co-star of multi-platinum gospel group Mary Mary) and Andra Day. All concerts take place on the MetroTech Commons, where tables and chairs are available for those enjoying their lunch and lone chairs and benches are also available. There is a grassy area where many sit on blankets and set up their own chairs.
Concerts are usually attended by groups of young children from day care and summer camp programs, as well as workers from the area, shoppers and music fans, who make a point of a catching these amazing act at an unbeatable ticket price, free. It only cost you taking time out of your busy New York schedule.
The Jones Family Singers, two virtuoso West African music legends, King Sunny Ade with his JuJu music, and the incredible Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate, jazz funk trumpeter/bandleader Theo Croker, New Orleans’ greatest legend of soul piano soul, deep blues, ragtime and boogie, Jon Cleary and his band the Awesome Monster Gentlemen, and Al B. Sure all grace the stage at MetroTech this year.
The lunchtime performances will be held Thursdays at noon to 2:00 p.m. at MetroTech Commons, located at the corner of Flatbush and Myrtle avenues, rain or shine.
