Alexis James was born on Sept. 17, 1989 in Mount Vernon, New York. she is the first generation born in America as both of his parents were born in Jamaica.
she graduated from Ramapo High School in Spring Valley, NY and attended Temple University, where she received his bachelor’s in Speech Pathology.
During James’s undergraduate studies, she assisted in the creation of a tutoring program for Bright Hope Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, where we served students between the ages of 6-16 years in various subjects.
James was also the vice president of a Hip-hop dance team, traveling to other colleges for events and competitions. she received the first prize for “Philly’s Best Dance Crew.”
She furthered his education at Pace University, where she received her Master’s in Special Education through the NYC Teaching Fellows.
James is now a special education teacher at the Bronx High School of Visual Arts, teaching students with autism, ranging from ages 14-21, in a self-contained classroom.
She said her passion for education shares an equal value with her passion for dance.
Last year, James started a dance program specifically designed for students with special needs at the Bronx High School of Visual Arts. The group performed at various events in the Bronx area.
James said she aspires to own a program, targeting the arts specifically, designed for students with disabilities who show great interest in this field.
She is an executive member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, an acolyte advisor and a member of the fundraising committee. She also helps to prepare community dinners, an event held twice a month at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
