The National Association of University Women (NAUW), Long Island Branch on Sunday awarded US$1,000 scholarships to seven deserving high school graduating students to help them pursue tertiary education.
The presentation took place on Sunday, April 24 during NAUW’s 33rd Annual Scholarship Luncheon gala at The Long Island Marriot Hotel, Uniondale.
The scholarship recipients were: Nia Cayenne (Bard High School Early College); Alesia Allen (St. Mary’s H.S. Manhassat); Jairus Wynder (Uniondale High School); Michailah Marshall (The Mary Louis Academy); Johnson Jean Baptiste (Uniondale High School); Kyla McNeil (Valley Stream Central High School); and Sandra Kitt (Cambria Heights Academy).
NAUW, Long Isand Branch also presented awards to: Nicole Neely (Jamaican heritage), Women of the Year; Brian M. Lewis, M. Ed (Cuban heritage), Community Service Award; Donnie McCoy Whitehead (American heritage), Community Service Award; and Elizabeth Morgan, M. Ed (Dominican Republic heritage), Hilda A. Davis Distinguished Award.
“The event showcased our youths, along with their talents,” Melinda Cashwell Edwards, NAUW, Long Island Branch president, told Caribbean Life.
“Our recipients played the violin, the saxophone, and one them did a spoken word poem, which relates to the everyday issues most young people face,” she added.
Cashwell Edwards also said her organization recognizes “women who have excelled academically and who have a strong passion and commitment to helping others in all communities.”
On the national level, she said NAUW presents awards to candidates pursuing master’s and doctorate degrees.
Guyanese-born Shaundell Agrippa, a NAUW, Long Island Branch member, who resides in Laurelton, Queens, also told Caribbean Life that the event was “superb.”
“Such talent and brilliance from our young people!” she exclaimed.
“I would like to see more male candidates applying for the scholarship fund,” she added, however.
